LASIK
Lasik
is short for laser in-situ Keratomileusis. It utilizes eximer laser
to bring down the power. In this a thin flap (F) is cut from cornea
by an automated machine called microtome. After this eximer laser
(L) is used to vaporize the microscopic layers of the corneal tissue
(S) to change its shape, allowing light rays to focus accurately on
the retina. Amount of laser is fully controlled by the computer.
After laser the corneal flap is replaced over to its normal position.
No stitches are required. Entire procedure is painless and takes
about 15 minutes and is performed under eye drop anaesthesia. It
does not require hospitalization. Often, but not always, the
improvement in vision is immediate. In other cases, the vision
consistently improves during the first post-operative week.
